BYD is a major Chinese automaker based in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. Founded in 1995, BYD started out as a battery maker and entered the automobile business in 2003.

20 years later, after overtaking Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2023, BYD became the top-selling battery electric vehicle manufacturer in the world. BYD is also the best-selling car brand in China since the first quarter of 2023, overtaking Volkswagen which held the title since the liberalisation of the Chinese automotive industry.
